Flatworms (Platworms)

In this category of animals, we find the planarians, hated worms which sometimes multiply massively in the aquarium and can then become annoying parasites. They usually lead a hidden existence and only show themselves at night. Many aquarists have been surprised at the number of flatworms present in their aquarium after using the planaria trap! As chemicals against planarians usually have undesirable side effects, the JBL planarian trap is a very good alternative without harmful side effects!

flatworms in sea water

Flatworms, such as nudibranchs or sea slugs, can look very pretty in seawater, but they can also become problematic for corals if they become invasive and attack them. There are turbellarians that are extremely well camouflaged and cannot even be seen on closer inspection. For example the flatworm Amakusaplana acroporae, which can attack Acropora hard corals and induce great damage. By soaking the affected corals in an iodine bath outside the aquarium (2 ml of (iso)Betadine per liter), the worms will become unable to move and can be flushed out with a strong jet of water. The six-banded wrasse (Pseudochelinus hexataenia) is an advised predator that also recognizes and devours the eggs of these worms.
