Aquascaping refers to the technique of landscaping in aquariums. It can be very original compositions of plants, reproductions of an earthly landscape or natural biotopes. An aquascaping aquarium often contains few fish and invertebrates or none at all. The supply of nutrients for the plants is therefore less important and their growth is limited. Nitrogen, phosphorus and other minerals become scarce commodities and targeted refertilization becomes necessary. For healthy growth in a beautiful underwater landscape, plants need adequate light, CO2 and nutrients.

The ultra-porous volcanic rock fulfills various functions in an aquascaping aquarium: on the one hand, it forms an ideal stable base for stone and/or wooden structures and prevents them from sinking into the substrate and, on the other hand , many useful bacteria come to colonize its porous structure. The porous structure of the rock allows nutrients to seep into it and provides many minerals, allowing plants to root and grow very well in it.
