Rotala wallichii: a demanding but spectacular aquarium plant

Rotala wallichii

Native to tropical Asia , Rotala wallichii grows naturally in rice paddies, ditches and shallow wetlands in Vietnam, China, India and Thailand. In aquariums, it is known for its very fine, whorled leaves , which change color depending on the light: from soft green to intense reds when well exposed. Its slender shape and airy foliage make it a favorite choice for backgrounds or to add height to a plant bed.

A medium-growing amphibious plant, it can reach up to 30 cm in height. When submerged, its leaves become even finer and more abundant. Grown in groups, it creates a striking effect of color density, perfect for adding depth to an aquatic landscape.

Growing conditions: demanding but incredibly rewarding

Let's be clear: this plant is not for beginners . To grow in good conditions, Rotala wallichii needs bright light and a good supply of CO2. It prefers soft to slightly acidic water, with a pH between 5 and 7 and a GH hardness of 1 to 13. The ideal temperature is between 24 and 28°C , but it tolerates 18 to 28°C.

Regular filter cleaning is recommended to maintain optimal water quality. Nutrient-wise, it loves phosphate levels around 1 to 2 mg/l and a regular supply of iron and microelements . Nitrate levels should remain between 5 and 15 mg/l to avoid deficiencies or excesses.

Planting, maintenance and tips for a spectacular result

Rotala wallichii in aquarium

When planting, remove your Rotala wallichii from its in vitro dish, rinse the gel well, divide it into 5 to 10 portions and space them well for harmonious growth. Plant it preferably in aquarium sand or a fine substrate. It does not require nutrient substrate for its roots; everything passes through water.

It tolerates frequent pruning well, which is even recommended to thicken the clumps and encourage regrowth. Each pruned stem can be replanted to fill out the clump. It is also a plant that provides good hiding places for small fish and adds depth to aquascaping settings.

Its inflorescences sometimes emerge to the surface, revealing small purple flowers that are as elegant as they are original. An additional touch that underlines the unique character of this extraordinary plant.
