Flame Moss: a vertical aesthetic at the heart of the aquarium

Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame Moss'

Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame Moss' is a still mysterious moss from East Asia that fascinates with its completely atypical growth habit. When submerged, its sparsely branched shoots spiral upwards towards the light, creating a striking impression of plant flames. Unlike other mosses that cascade, this one grows vertically, making it ideal for covering aquarium roots , rocks, or even wall decorations.

It can reach between 5 and 10 cm in height , forming dense and decorative masses. Its thick foliage and upright habit bring volume and a sharp contrast to aquascaping compositions. It is also an excellent option for nano aquariums where every centimeter counts.

Easy growing conditions: undemanding but spectacular

Flame Moss grows slowly and doesn't require much to be happy. Moderate lighting is enough to keep it in shape, although it will be more compact and intense under stronger light. It tolerates a wide temperature range, from 12 to 30°C , but its growth is most vigorous around 24°C. Water-wise, a pH between 6 and 7.5 and a hardness between 0 and 15 GH suit it very well.

It doesn't require a CO2 system to grow, but if you want a lush, vibrant green moss, a little nutrient supplementation won't hurt. It thrives best in low to moderate current. Just avoid areas with excessive light or dirt: a good filter cleaning is essential to prevent algae, its main enemy.

Aquascaping Use, Maintenance, and Tips

Flame Moss is an ultra-versatile moss: it can be used to create green walls, floor mats, or as a decorative accent. Simply attach it to a surface (roots, rocks, or even plastic mesh) with fishing line, and it will take root over time. It can even be grown on rocks or used as a floating plant for fish spawn.

It's also a great refuge for shrimp, who hide there and find tons of micro-food. In addition, it supports dry start well, which makes it easy to install when launching the tank.

Moss needs to be trimmed regularly to keep its neat appearance. And the good thing is that each cut end can be replanted elsewhere: propagation by division is super simple . Be careful, however, not to leave any lying around everywhere, as it could settle in unwanted corners.
