A perfect plant for a natural and harmonious aquarium

Staurogyne repens

Staurogyne repens is a foreground plant distinguished by its compact shape and small, bright green leaves. Unlike plants of the genus Hygrophila, it grows more densely and horizontally, forming a low ground cover ideal for aquatic landscaping . This plant grows naturally in sunny areas along Brazilian rivers, where it colonizes banks and rocks.

In aquariums, it adapts well to soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6 to 7) with a temperature between 22 and 30°C . It thrives in a nutrient- rich substrate and benefits from a moderate CO2 system (6-14 mg/L). Its lighting should be medium to intense to prevent it from stretching towards the light.

Simplified planting and maintenance

Staurogyne repens is easy to plant in an aquarium. Simply separate the plant into small branches and space them 3 to 5 cm apart to allow for expansion. Once rooted, it produces creeping shoots that form a dense, compact mat.

To ensure optimal growth, it is recommended to regularly add beneficial bacteria to the aquarium and provide appropriate fertilization. Although robust, it responds positively to good tank maintenance, particularly by monitoring filter cleaning and avoiding herbivorous fish that might nibble on its tender leaves.

An asset for aquascaping

Due to its low, bushy habit, Staurogyne repens is often used to create a natural setting in aquariums. It combines perfectly with hardscape elements such as rocks or driftwood. It can be used to mask unsightly areas or fill in spaces between stones, creating a natural and harmonious effect.
