Generally, the pigments associated with the coloring of fish are melanin, guanine and carotenoids. Most fish can produce melanin and guanine, so they do not need to be supplemented in the diet, but fish cannot synthesize carotenoids de novo, so these pigments must be obtained from food. In this case, Dunaliella and Haematococcus microalgae represent natural sources of the two main carotenoids, beta-carotene and astaxanthin, respectively. These two pigments cause pink/orange/red pigmentation of the skin of various species of fish in aquaculture and aquariums, as has been demonstrated in food supplements for different species of fish.
