Phosphorus is one of the basic elements necessary for the construction of living molecules. It is present in every living being, as well as in the water of every reef aquarium marked "PO4". This source of PO4 will come from fish food in significant concentrations. A simple addition of 5 grams of dry food to a 750 liter aquarium will raise the PO4 level by 0.2 PPM. Then the fish will excrete the excess PO4 obtained from the food as a waste product. Tap water can be a significant source of phosphate, so it is advisable to avoid using deionized or distilled water.
The concentration of phosphate in natural seawater is approximately 0.06 PPM. This value, however, is considerably lower in coral reef areas. Usually, this concentration is between 0.01 and 0.02 PPM. With the Royal Nature Phosphate Test Kit, the Phosphate concentration can be determined within a range of the following values 0.05 – 0.1 – 0.3 – 0.5 – 1 – 3 and 5 PPM with a color scale very precise.
