Healthy pond or aquarium and living conditions close to nature

The correct water parameters in the aquarium/pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can be polluted. If the parameters are wrong, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To have a healthy pond or aquarium with conditions close to the natural environment, it is important to regularly check and adapt the water parameters.

For every water analysis, JBL offers quick tests or color tests. These tests calculate a specific parameter or several parameters at the same time. They identify algae problems and negative parameters of nitrates, nitrites, potassium, magnesium, etc.

Why test?

In the aquarium, phosphates enter the water mainly through the digestive processes of fish and through food residues falling into the water. In ponds, phosphates arrive in the water mainly with the foliage and the plants or algae which wither. If the circumstances are unfavourable, the phosphate levels that are reached can be 100 times higher, or even more, than the natural levels. The inevitable consequence will be an almost explosive proliferation of unwanted algae.

Recommended phosphate content

  • Freshwater aquarium (community): 0-0.4 mg/l Malawi-Tanganyika aquarium: 0-0.4 mg/l
  • Planted tank with few fish (aquascaping): 0.1-1.5 mg/l Saltwater aquarium: 0-0.1 mg/l
  • Basin: <0.05 mg/l
