  • Simple and safe control of ammonium (NH4) and ammonia (NH3) in aquariums and ponds. Verification of the biological balance (bacterial activity) in fresh water and sea water.
  • Comparative laboratory system to compensate for the color of the water itself: fill the glass test tubes with water to be tested, add the reagents in a test tube, place the test tubes in the block, link the values on the color chart and table.
  • Use: for new fresh water tank: once a day. For new seawater tank: once a week. And in case of disease or death of fish.
  • On the JBL/Thèmes/Aquarium or Bassin website, you will find detailed information on water analyzes and troubleshooting
  • Included in delivery: 1 rapid test Ammonium NH4. Content for approx. 50 measures. With 3 reagents, 2 glass test tubes with screw cap, syringe, comparator block and color chart. Reagent refills available separately.

Healthy pond or aquarium and living conditions close to nature

The correct water parameters in the aquarium/pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can be polluted. If the parameters are wrong, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To have a healthy pond or aquarium with conditions close to the natural environment, it is important to regularly check and adapt the water parameters.

For every water analysis, JBL offers quick tests or color tests. These tests calculate a specific parameter or several parameters at the same time. They identify algae problems and negative parameters of nitrates, nitrites, potassium, magnesium, etc.

Why test?

The process of degradation or mineralization of all the organic substances present in the aquarium and the pond goes through the stages Proteins > Ammonium > Nitrite > Nitrates. The measurement of these steps allows conclusions to be drawn about the "functioning" of the aquarium or pond system. An ammonium or nitrite level that is too high can cause a disturbance in the bacterial flora. As a general rule, in a well-maintained aquarium equipped with a high-performance biological filter or in a correctly arranged garden pond, it will not be possible to measure ammonium. Ammonium is an important nutrient for plants and normally harmless to fish. Depending on the pH level, however, ammonium may turn into ammonia, which is toxic to fish.

Recommended ammonium level

Freshwater aquarium (community): < 0.25 mg/l Malawi-Tanganyika aquarium: < 0.25 mg/l
Planted tank with few fish (aquascaping): < 0.25 mg/l
Saltwater aquarium: 0-0.25 mg/l
Basin: < 0.1 mg/l
