  • Silicates (silicic acid) are the source of unattractive diatomaceous algae. This test is used to determine the silicate content of freshwater or saltwater aquariums for the control of diatoms.
  • Comparative laboratory system to compensate for the inherent color of the water: fill the test tubes with water to be tested, add the reagents to a test tube, place the test tubes in the support block, note the values on the color chart.
  • Use: new impoundment, control of tap water and in case of diatom algae problems.
  • On the JBL/Themes Aquarium website you will find detailed information on water analyzes and solutions to problems.

Healthy pond or aquarium and living conditions close to nature

The correct water parameters in the aquarium/pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can be polluted. If the parameters are wrong, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To have a healthy pond or aquarium with conditions close to the natural environment, it is important to regularly check and adapt the water parameters.

For every water analysis, JBL offers quick tests or color tests. These tests calculate a specific parameter or several parameters at the same time. They identify algae problems and negative parameters of nitrates, nitrites, potassium, magnesium, etc.

Why test?

Silicon is one of the most abundant elements on earth. During the disintegration of silicate rocks, silicon arrives in the groundwater and surface waters in the form of silicate. This is the reason why tap water has higher or lower levels of dissolved silicate, depending on the nature of the subsoil in the region concerned. Silicon is important for aquariums and garden ponds as a nutrient for diatom algae, some aquatic plants and siliceous sponges, as well as many other invertebrates. JBL Lab Online

Regular checks for a healthy pond or aquarium and living conditions close to the natural environment. Enter your water parameters in the JBL Lab online and you'll get an in-depth analysis of those numbers in seconds.

Recommended silicate content

Freshwater aquarium (community): 0-2.0 mg/l Malawi-Tanganyika aquarium: algae-grazing fish species love to eat siliceous algae, the silica content does not play a role here.
Without grazers: 0-2.0 mg/l
Planted tank with few fish (aquascaping): 0-2.0 mg/l Saltwater aquarium: 0-1.0 mg/l
Basin: 0-2.0mg/l
