  • Simple and safe control of water parameters in aquariums or ponds. Determination of the optimum total hardness for freshwater aquariums and ponds.
  • Color test: fill the plastic test tube with water to be tested, pour the reagent drop by drop until the red changes to green. Number of drops = total hardness level.
  • Use: in case of new impoundment: once a week, later once a month
  • On the JBL/Thèmes/Aquarium or Bassin website, you will find detailed information on water analyzes and troubleshooting
  • Contents: 1 GH rapid test, a reagent and a plastic test tube. Reagent refill available separately.

Healthy pond or aquarium and living conditions close to nature

The correct water parameters in the aquarium/pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can be polluted. If the parameters are wrong, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To have a healthy pond or aquarium with conditions close to the natural environment, it is important to regularly check and adapt the water parameters.

For every water analysis, JBL offers quick tests or color tests. These tests calculate a specific parameter or several parameters at the same time. They identify algae problems and negative parameters of nitrates, nitrites, potassium, magnesium, etc.

Why test?

Depending on the origin and nature of the subsoil, the water may contain more or less high quantities of alkaline-earth salts. As a rule, these are then calcium or magnesium salts. The total calcium and magnesium ions represent the total hardness. Most fish are easy to maintain with a total hardness of around 8 to 20°dH, but care must be taken to lower total hardnesses that are too high by taking appropriate measures.

Regular checks for a healthy pond or aquarium and living conditions close to the natural environment. Enter your water parameters in the JBL Lab online and you'll get an in-depth analysis of those numbers in seconds.

Recommended total hardness

  • Freshwater aquarium (community): 8-25°dGH Malawi-Tanganyika aquarium: 5-20°dGH
  • Planted aquarium with few fish (aquascaping): 3-10 °dGH
  • Saltwater aquarium: not measurable with the GH test, because it is too high. Test calcium and magnesium separately.
  • Pelvis: 6-20°dGH
