SALIFERT - Kh Test

Instructions for use of the Salifert Kh analysis

ATTENTION

Keep out of reach of children! Do not swallow!

KH-Ind reagent contains dye. Avoid spilling the dye on fabric or other materials, or they may be stained.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Pour 4 ml of water into the test tube using the 5 ml syringe. For lower resolution and to allow more tests to be performed per kit, only pour 2 ml instead of 4.
  • Shake the KH-Ind dropper bottle several times and add 4 drops to the test tube. (2 drops for low resolution test).
  • Place the plastic tip firmly on the 1 ml syringe, and fill it with KH reagent until the bottom of the black plunger is at the 1.00 ml graduation. During this operation, make sure that the tip remains immersed in the reagent to avoid aspirating air bubbles instead of liquid. A layer of air between the plunger and the liquid is normal. This is the air that was present between the tip of the tip and the plunger. This will not influence the result.
  • Begin adding KH reagent to the test tube with the 1 mL syringe until the color changes from blue/green to an orange-red or pink color (whichever color you initially observed). Stir for a second or two after each drop added.
  • Holding the syringe with the cone upwards, read the position of the top of the plunger. Each graduation corresponds to 0.01 ml. The KH or alkalinity can be obtained using the table below.

If you chose to do a low resolution test, multiply the calculated result by 2.

Natural seawater has a KH of 7 - 8 dKH. KH and alkalinity can be increased: click here to see our articles
