ATTENTION

Keep out of reach of children! Do not swallow!

Calcium will not interfere if its concentration is between 300 and 500ppm, which is the most common case.

INSTRUCTIONS:

There will be air present just below the plunger of 2ml-1ml syringes. This is air that was present between the end of the plastic tip and the plunger. DO NOT attempt to remove this air, for example by repeatedly purging the syringe.

  • Pour 2 ml of water to be tested into the test tube, using the syringe.
  • Add 5 drops of Mg-1 reagent and stir gently for 5 seconds.
  • Place the plastic tip firmly on the 1 ml syringe, and fill it with Mg-2 reagent until the bottom of the black plunger is at the 1.00 ml graduation. During this operation, make sure that the tip remains submerged in the Mg-2 reagent to avoid aspirating air bubbles instead of liquid. A layer of air between the plunger and the liquid is normal. This is the air that was present between the tip of the tip and the plunger. This will not influence the result.
  • Begin adding Mg-2 reagent to the test tube with the 1 mL syringe until the color changes to gray or blue (whichever color you initially observed). Stir for a second or two after each drop added.
  • Holding the syringe with the cone upwards, read the position of the top of the plunger. Each graduation corresponds to 0.01 ml. The magnesium concentration can be obtained using the table.

Natural seawater contains a magnesium concentration of about 1280 ppm. The concentration varies with salinity. Click here to see our articles
