  • Perfect plant growth: determining the optimal magnesium level for fertilization control in freshwater aquariums
  • Comparative laboratory system to compensate for the inherent color of the water: fill the test tubes with water to be tested, add the reagents to a test tube, place the test tubes in the support block, note the values on the color chart.
  • Lack of magnesium leads to stagnant growth and pale leaves in aquatic plants. Remedy: a fertilizer containing magnesium such as JBL Ferropol, JBL ProScape Mg Macroelements.
  • On the JBL/Thèmes/Aquarium or Bassin website, you will find detailed information on water analyzes and troubleshooting

Healthy aquarium and living conditions close to nature The right water parameters in the aquarium depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it can be polluted. If the parameters are wrong, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium. To have a healthy aquarium with conditions close to the natural environment, it is important to regularly check and adapt the water parameters.

For every water analysis, JBL offers quick tests or color tests. These tests calculate a specific parameter or several parameters at the same time. They identify algae problems and negative parameters of nitrates, nitrites, potassium, magnesium, etc.

Why test?

Magnesium forms with calcium the total hardness. Magnesium is, like potassium, one of the macroelements that plants need to grow well. Tap water usually contains too little magnesium for aquatic plants, so they can quickly show deficiencies. Despite regular fertilization of the aquarium water, the available amounts of magnesium can be too low and plant growth stagnates.

Recommended magnesium level

Freshwater aquarium (community): 5-10 mg/l Malawi-Tanganyika aquarium: 5-10 mg/l
Planted tank with few fish (aquascaping): 5-10 mg/l Seawater aquarium: magnesium levels in seawater vary between 1200 and 1600 mg/l. This test is therefore not suitable for this. For seawater, use the special test: JBL Magnesnium/Calcium Test.
