UV filter for freshwater aquarium
The water balance of your aquarium is fundamental for the health of your fish — freshwater or saltwater — as well as for the growth of plants. The UV filter is essential to ensure the sterilization and decontamination of the water in your pool, and thus guarantee its durability.
The role of the UV filter in an aquarium
The aquarium being a confined space, its water struggles to regulate itself naturally. The UV filter purifies it of the waste produced by plants and fish, in order to preserve it from any turbidity.
The UV filter is considered a sterilizer. It eliminates bacteria, algae and other pathogens harmful to the health of fish. UV is divided into UVA, UVB and UVC. These are the most effective and therefore those selected for the operation of the sterilizer.
How the UV filter works
The operation of the sterilizer is simple: the aquarium water circulates through its submerged pump and passes in front of a lamp producing UVC. Pathogens, micro algae, algae spores, parasites and bacteria are then eradicated.
The use of the UV filter is not permanent. You can leave it running all year round or turn it on only when you doubt the purity of your water. If, for example, it becomes whitish or greenish, it should be rid of its impurities.
It is strongly advised to carry out a purification when you treat your plants or your fish, as well as before integrating new fish.
How to choose your UV filter
You will find on this page a wide choice of UV filters, as well as spare bulbs.
The selection criterion for your sterilizer is its power expressed in watts. The watt corresponds to the quantity of energy during a given time; therefore, the larger your aquarium, the more power it should have.
We invite you to click on the image of our UV filters, in order to access their product sheet. This tells you the power and specifies the volume of water in the aquarium that it is able to treat, whether it is fresh water or sea water.
Maintaining your UV filter
The lifespan of a UV bulb oscillating between 5,000 and 9,000 hours, you must ensure that you change it regularly. As for the filter, install it preferably vertically, in order to ward off the deposits of organic matter in its sheath.

Questions / Réponses
For an aquarium, it is generally best to place the UV filter outside the aquarium, as close to the filtration pump as possible. Some UV filters are directly integrated into the internal filter of the aquarium.
It is important to note that the external UV filter must be installed upstream of the biological filtration to avoid killing beneficial bacteria.
The UV filter must be installed in an easily accessible location for maintenance and replacement of the UV lamp. It is also important to ensure that the UV filter is installed in a location where it will not be exposed to excessive heat or vibration, as this could affect its operation.

The role of UV-C filters in an aquarium is to disinfect the water by destroying bacteria, viruses and parasites harmful to fish, as well as phytoplankton (single-celled algae that can cause water turbidity). When the water temperature exceeds 8-9°C, it is time to restart the filtration system, turn on the UV light and start feeding the fish. A UV filter will help clarify the water, while your filtration system will help neutralize excess organic matter in the water.
The UV power of a pond depends on the volume, population and exposure to the sun. 2 watts of average UV-C power required per cubic meter of water, for a pool with little exposure to the sun and between 3 to 4 for strong exposure to the sun.
The UV filter comes in the form of a tube, usually made of black plastic, inside which there is a quartz tube containing the UV lamp. The water, passing through this tube, is therefore free of germs, and the proliferation of algae is stopped.
