Sands, Quartz and Substrates for Freshwater Aquariums: Everything you need to know

Why Choosing the Right Substrate is Essential for Your Aquarium

Sand, quartz and technical and nutrient substrates are not just decorative elements in a freshwater aquarium. They directly influence the health of the fish, the growth of aquatic plants and the overall balance of the ecosystem . A good choice of substrate promotes the colonization of beneficial bacteria, stabilizes the soil and provides a suitable ground for the rooting of plants.

How to choose the right sand or quartz for your aquarium?

The choice of substrate must take into account several essential criteria:

1. Granulometry: a crucial element

Sand that is too fine prevents water circulation and promotes anoxic areas (lack of oxygen). A substrate that is too coarse accumulates waste and degrades water quality. The ideal is a grain size between 0.5 and 2 mm for good biological balance.

2. A texture suitable for bottom fish

Burrowing fish such as Corydoras and loaches spend their time digging. A sand with rounded grains, such as Loire sand, is preferable to avoid injuries.

3. A color that matches your tank

The color of the substrate also influences the behavior of the fish. Shy species prefer dark soil, while light soil will highlight brightly colored fish . Be careful, a very light substrate gets dirty more quickly.

4. Impact on water parameters

Some sands, especially calcareous sands, modify the pH and hardness of the water. Conversely, inert sands, such as Loire sand, are suitable for the majority of tropical aquariums . If you want a soil that influences the parameters, a technical soil is more suitable.

5. How much sand should I use?

The ideal thickness varies depending on the type of aquarium:

  • Planted aquarium : 5 to 7 cm to ensure good rooting.
  • Aquarium without plants : 3 to 5 cm is enough.

To calculate the exact amount, use our sand volume calculator tool .

Nutrient substrate: an asset for a planted aquarium

If you dream of a lush aquarium, adding nutrient soil is essential. It provides aquatic plants with all the essential elements for their growth (nutrients, trace elements, vitamins). Its role is to nourish the roots over several years, ensuring a healthy and stable aquarium.

Installation of a nutrient substrate

  1. Add a 2 to 4 cm layer of nutrient substrate to the bottom of the tank.
  2. Cover with a layer of sand or gravel to prevent it from mixing with water.
  3. Plant your plants and let the nitrogen cycle establish itself before adding fish.

Little extra : Consider supplementing with nutrients for an even more spectacular result.

Technical soil: essential for aquascaping and shrimps

The technical soil is designed for demanding aquarists. It helps stabilize water parameters by providing a low pH and a KH close to 0 , ideal for heavily planted aquariums or Caridina shrimp.

    Advantages of technical flooring

    • Adjusts pH and KH for a stable environment.
    • Promotes rapid growth of aquatic plants .
    • Ideal for aquascaping and sensitive shrimp .

      How to use it properly?

      • Do not rinse the floor before installation .
      • Allow for a layer of 5 to 6 cm .
      • Use remineralized osmosis water to prolong its buffer effect.
      • Change the water regularly during the first few weeks to stabilize the parameters.

Optimize your aquarium with the right accessories

A quality substrate makes a big difference, but for best results, make sure you have good lighting and a CO2 system . These elements boost the photosynthesis of plants and promote a vibrant aquarium.

Finally, a balanced aquarium also requires a suitable diet. Remember to offer quality aquarium food to your fish to keep them in good shape.
